Editorial Status

About Editorial Status

Keywords and ads are reviewed for compliance with the Editorial Guidelines. A keyword or ad might be declined or removed if it contains a superlative (like "best" or "cheapest"), a repeated word (like "sale, sale, sale"), or contact information (such as a phone number). But there are other reasons, as well. TheSponsored Search Editorial Guidelines describes acceptable and unacceptable keywords and ads and offers tips for writing effective ads. You can also refer to theTips if Keywords or Ads are Declined topic for more tips if your keywords or ads are declined or removed.

If you make a change to an ad or a keyword (such as changing its custom URL or alternate text), then the change may also be reviewed.

Refer to the Statuses topic for descriptions of editorial statuses.

Searching for Keywords and Ads by Editorial Status

You can search for keywords and ads by editorial status using the following criteria:

  • Editorial Status – Use this dropdown list to limit your search to find all items, regardless of editorial status, or just pending, declined, or removed items.
  • Account – If you have more than one account, select the account from this dropdown list.
  • Find Keywords In / Find Ads In – Use this dropdown list to limit your search to either campaigns or ad groups.
  • Where Name – Select whether you want to search for campaign or ad group names by the following criteria:
    • Contains - Searches by part of a campaign or ad group name. For example, to search for ad groups with "Hollywood" anywhere in the name, select Contains and enter "Hollywood" in the field.
    • Begins With - Searches by the first few letters of a campaign or ad group name. For example, to search for campaign names starting with "2006" select Begins With and enter "2006" in the field.
    • Is Exactly - Searches by the exact campaign or ad group name. For example, to search for the "Winter Outerwear Sale" campaign, select Is Exactly and enter the full campaign name in the field.

The keywords or ads matching your search criteria are displayed. To see why the ad or keyword was declined or removed, click the keyword or ad name. The Editorial Status Details page opens. You can view details related to the editorial status and make changes on that page.

Downloading Status Information

If you have many keywords or ads that have been declined or removed, you may find it easier to download a file containing their status information. The downloaded file lists all keywords and ads with a status of Declined or Removed based on the date range and filter settings of the Keyword or Ad tab. (Keywords and ads with a status of Pending aren't included in the file.) The file is a WinZip file containing the summary information in CSV (comma-separated values) format that you can read using Microsoft Excel. It includes an explanation of the problem and may suggest ways to fix the problem.

To download keywords and ads:

  1. Open the Editorial Status page.
  2. Click the Download Keywords and Ads link. The File Download dialog box opens.
  3. Click Open to open the WinZip file or Save to save it to your computer.
  4. In the WinZip file, double-click the file to open it.
