Managing Insert Keywords

The Insert Keyword feature can allow you to save time and help increase the relevancy and click-through rate of your ads. It uses a keyword token to dynamically insert the keyword that matched the user’s search query, into your ad’s title and/or description when it is displayed. You can use the Insert Keyword feature when creating a new ad or editing an existing ad.

To use the “Insert Keyword” feature:

  1. Click the "Campaigns" tab.
  2. Choose a campaign.
  3. Choose an ad group.
  4. Once you are on the Ad Group Details page, you will need to:
    1. Click “Create New Ad” if you are creating a new ad, or
    2. Choose the “Ads” tab, click the desired ad name to edit the existing ad, and insert the keyword token in the title and/or description fields.
  5. On the “Create Your Ad” page you will be prompted to provide a:
    1. Title
    2. Short Description
    3. Long Description
    4. Destination URL
    5. Display URL and
    6. Ad Name
  6. You can use the “Insert Keyword” feature for your title, short and/or long description. To access the “Insert Keyword” feature, begin typing your title, short description or long description.
  7. You will see the “Insert Keyword” link appear below the text field.
  8. At the point in the title or description where you want a keyword inserted, click the “Insert Keyword” link below the text field. In the Keyword Insertion dialog box, enter the default text.
  9. Click the “Add Keyword Placeholder” button.
  10. Use the keyword placeholder, {KEYWORD:default_text}, to insert a keyword into the title or description.
  11. Click "Save"
  12. You can specify alternate text for a keyword on the Keyword Details page. To create alternate text for a keyword:
    1. In the Ad Group Details page, click the “Keywords” tab.
    2. Identify the keyword and click its link.
    3. Click the “Edit” link next to Alternate Text near the top of the page.
    4. Enter the alternate text.
    5. Click “Submit”.

Note: Alternate text may also be used in place of the keyword.
